For Krista Cantafio, a resident of Catonsville, Maryland, walking around her own front yard now means keeping an eye over her shoulder. Over the past two years, no less than nine cars have crashed into her yard, enough to leave anyone jumpy about standing near the curb. She wants speed humps installed nearby to slow the traffic down, though there’s no guarantee the request will go anywhere.Cantafio lives on a corner lot set around a sharp curve off Wilkens Avenue. The bend looks well-marked from the road, yet drivers keep taking it far too fast, washing wide into understeer and winding up on her lawn. Over the years, several traffic calming measures have been installed, including rumble strips on the road, but as reported by WMAR-2 News, they haven’t worked.Baltimore County says the road now qualifies for speed humps, but it’s not simply a matter of local officials approving them. Instead, at least 75 percent of property owners who live adjacent to any speed humps must approve the plan. Security footage from outside Cantafio’s home captured the crash. While a large tree on Cantafio’s lawn blocks the Rogue from view, audio indicates the SUV understeered through the corner with its tires screaming out in agony. It then smashed through small boulders placed on the yard, bounced across the grass, and came to a rest just feet away from her home. Fortunately, she wasn’t in the yard at the time.
