The redesigned Kona is inching closer to production and spy photographers recently snapped a prototype undergoing hot weather testing in Spain. It’s dressed in heavy camouflage, but hides a radical rethink.This is clearly visible despite the disguise as the Kona morphs into a traditional crossover rather than a lifted hatchback. There’s been some debate about its authenticity, but the model will adopt a shark nose front end with a protruding upper light bar.Further below, there are mid-mounted headlights and what appear to be active intakes with angular doors. They’re joined by air curtains as well as a black plastic lower bumper, which sports a prominent lip.Moving further back, there’s a rakish windscreen and a sloping roof. They’re accompanied by a relatively compact greenhouse and an upward sweeping beltline. We can also get a glimpse of pronounced wheel arches and aerodynamically optimized wheels.The rear end is harder to decipher, but we can see mid-mounted taillights peeking through the mesh disguise. A closer inspection reveals a wider liftgate and a single exhaust tip hiding below the bumper.Spy photographers haven’t gotten a good look inside, but we can expect the model to follow in the footsteps of recent additions such as the Grandeur and Elantra. This means the crossover could be offered with a 12.9- and 14.6-inch Pleos Connect infotainment system. Engine options are a mystery, but the Seltos gives us a pretty good idea of what to expect. That model comes equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder developing 190 hp (142 kW / 193 PS) and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system.Later this year, the Seltos will gain a hybrid powertrain that uses a 1.6-liter engine and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The company hasn’t said much about the US-spec model at this point, but confirmed the hybrid will have front-wheel drive as well as an optional all-wheel drive system that uses a rear-mounted electric motor.
